Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Ground Beef Lean is best
  • 1/2 whole Large Onion finely diced
  • 1/2 whole Large Green Bell Pepper finely diced
  • 1 1/2 cups Ketchup
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 2 tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Chili Powder more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Dry Mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes optional
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato Paste
  • Salt and Black Pepper to taste
  • 8 whole Hamburger Buns
  • 2 tablespoons Butter for grilling buns

Instructions

Brown the Ground Beef

  • Place the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Break the meat apart with a spoon. Cook until the beef is brown and no longer pink. Drain off the excess fat.

Add the Vegetables

  • Add the diced onions and green peppers to the skillet with the meat. Stir them in well. Cook for about 5 minutes. The vegetables should become soft and translucent but not mushy.

Mix the Sauce Ingredients

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, water, and brown sugar. Add the chili powder, dry mustard, and red pepper flakes. Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and mix until very smooth.

Simmer the Meat Mixture

  • Pour the sauce mixture over the cooked beef and vegetables. Add the tomato paste. Stir everything together until the meat is fully coated. Turn the heat down to low.

Let the Flavors Melt

  • Cover the skillet and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps the sauce thicken and the flavors combine. If it gets too thick, add a splash of water. Season with salt and pepper.

Toast the Buns

  • Melt butter in a separate pan or griddle. Place the buns face down in the butter. Toast them until they are golden brown and crispy. This prevents the bread from getting soggy.

Assemble the Sandwiches

  • Spoon a large portion of the meat mixture onto the bottom bun. Place the top bun over the meat. Press down slightly so the juices soak in. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Toast the Buns: Never skip toasting the buns with butter. The crispy texture holds the heavy meat much better.
  • Hidden Veggies: You can grate carrots or zucchini into the meat. It adds nutrition and kids won't even notice.
  • Spice it Up: Add chopped jalapeƱos if you like a spicy kick. You can also add a dash of hot sauce.
  • Sweetness Level: If you prefer a savory taste, reduce the brown sugar by half. The ketchup is already quite sweet.
  • Turkey Option: You can swap ground beef for ground turkey. It is a leaner option but still tastes great with this sauce.
  • Make it Ahead: The flavors actually improve the next day. You can make the meat filling 24 hours in advance.
