Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds lean ground beef 80/20 works best
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pack slider rolls such as Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 8 slices American cheese or sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard or Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds optional garnish
  • 1/2 cup dill pickle slices optional topping

Instructions

Brown the Ground Beef

  • Place your skillet over medium heat on the stove. Add the ground beef and diced onions to the pan. Cook for 7 to 8 minutes until the beef is fully browned. Drain off any excess fat from the pan.

Season the Meat Mixture

  • Turn the heat down to low. Stir in minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3 minutes so all flavors mix nicely. Remove the pan from heat and set aside.

Slice the Slider Buns

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the slider rolls out of their package. Use a large serrated knife to cut the entire sheet of rolls horizontally into two halves. Place the bottom half in your baking dish.

Spread Mayo and Mustard

  • Spread mayonnaise evenly over the bottom layer of bread. Next, spread yellow mustard right on top of the mayonnaise layer. This tangy base layer keeps your bread soft while adding fantastic flavor to every bite.

Add Beef and Cheese

  • Spoon the seasoned cooked beef evenly over the bottom buns. Press it down gently with a spatula. Place slices of American cheese across the hot beef so it covers every corner completely. Add pickles now if you like.

Bake and Serve Warm

  • Put the top half of the rolls over the cheese. Brush melted butter over the tops of the buns. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Cover with foil and bake 10 minutes. Uncover and bake 5 minutes until golden.

Notes

  • Try different cheeses: Swap American cheese for smoked provolone, pepper jack, or sharp cheddar for extra kick.
  • Add crispy bacon: Cook chopped bacon bits and mix them directly into the ground beef filling before baking.
  • Toast the bottom buns: Bake just the bottom half of rolls for 3 minutes before adding meat to prevent sogginess.
  • Make a secret sauce: Mix mayo, ketchup, relish, and a splash of vinegar for an iconic diner-style burger sauce.
  • Use ground turkey: Swap ground beef for turkey or chicken for a lighter dinner option that stays juicy.
  • Garlic butter topping: Add garlic salt and chopped parsley into your melted butter before brushing the top buns.
