Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 400 g canned tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup beef stock

For the Béchamel Sauce

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper
  • Pinch of nutmeg

For Assembly

  • 9 lasagne sheets
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

Prepare the Base

  • Heat olive oil in a large pan. Add chopped onions and cook until soft. Stir in garlic and cook for one minute. This builds a strong flavor base.

Cook the Meat

  • Add ground beef to the pan. Cook until browned and crumbly. Break the meat into small pieces. This helps create a smooth and even sauce.

Add Tomato Flavor

  • Mix in tomato paste and cook for two minutes. Add canned tomatoes and beef stock. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.

Season and Simmer

  • Add oregano, salt, and pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally. The sauce should become thick and rich.

Make the Béchamel Sauce

  • Melt butter in a saucepan. Add flour and stir for one minute. Slowly pour in milk while whisking. Cook until smooth and creamy.

Season the Béchamel

  • Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Stir well. The sauce should be silky and lump-free. Remove from heat and set aside.

Preheat the Oven

  • Set your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease your baking dish lightly. This prevents sticking and helps easy serving later.

Start Layering

  • Spread a thin layer of meat sauce at the bottom. Add lasagne sheets on top. This creates the base layer.

Add More Layers

  • Add more meat sauce, then béchamel, and sprinkle cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used. Finish with cheese on top.

Bake the Lasagne

  • Place the dish in the oven. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh pasta sheets for a softer texture
  • Add vegetables like spinach or mushrooms
  • Try ground chicken instead of beef
  • Use extra cheese for a richer taste
  • Let lasagne rest before cutting for clean slices
